Teleportation App Prototype
In this quick conceptual project, I designed a user flow for a mobile app that uses teleportation to transport you from one place to another, instantaneously. I created a low fidelity user flow, high fidelity wireframes, and showcased three screens from the flow in high fidelity visual design.
Skills: User research, UX design, UI design, Rapid prototype, Branding
Research & Discovery
To kick off this charette, I made a wordcloud to capture initial thoughts, wonders and worries about teleportation. I also conducted some quick desk research, reading up on the MIT Technology Review's report of photon teleportation and watching Harry Potter apparating scenes. Lastly, I performed a light competitor audit to better understand the travel & tourism app landscape and UI trends.
User Research
In this fast & furious charette, time for user research was limited -- so meant talking to my friends & family about how a teleportation app would change their lives. I was inspired by their reactions and determined there would be two main users of the app: The Commuter and The Explorer.

Core Screens
Core app screens show utility for both The Commuter (get to frequently visited places, fast) and The Explorer (discover destinations and events, curated according to user's interests and current trends). Click through carousel below to see details and features of each screen.
Visual Identity & Naming
Volo means “flight, gliding” in Italian and “I want” in Latin. The name is active and direct, and the visual design reflects these traits. I used typography & color as the main visual expressions in the app, to keep the focus on usability. Shapes from the logo mark can be used as graphic elements to build out a brand or pattern system. Colors are bright, optimistic, and powerful. They convey what I feel when I think about transportatin of the future. And what if the teleportation journey itself carried you along a light spectrum? This idea inspired the signature gradient colorway.
Footnotes:
Areas of focus: Basic user journey of teleporting from point A to point B, Needs of The Commuter vs. The Explorer, Help users decide where to go through curation, Highlight user safety, Solve for users missing out on journey/observing destination, Amplify app offerings by partnering with existing, successful businesses, Integrate with OS-level features.
Assumption 1: Users were also interested in time travel, space travel, deep ocean travel. At this time I am limiting the MVP teleportation app to take place in present time and present world. Version 2 can allow for time travel and space exploration :)
Assumption 2: We have reached the point in society where teleportation is a safe, affordable, normal way to travel. Compare to how Lyft/Uber is perceived in 2020.
